No one thought Betty** could hold a pencil or even care enough to want to draw. I greeted her with my eyes looking into hers, in a way that felt like only she and I existed in the world and this world slowed down just for us. I lifted her hand gently, and patiently waited until the colored pencil was in her hand and with my hand softly over hers we started coloring. Within a matter of a few strokes, I was able to let go and she was coloring and was able to focus on the task at hand! It didn't matter what color it was or whether or not it was going to look like a masterpiece, what mattered is that for that time, there were wonderful things happening in her mind, body and soul. Mine too!
** I will always protect the privacy of the wonderful people I work with and never use their real names.
